The Mabou Musical Mentorship Program

Derrick and Melody Cameron are currently acting as the coordinators for a new Feis Mhabu project named "The Mabou Musical Mentorship Program".  This mentoring program's focus is on using house sessions to bring together talented young performers of Cape Breton music and dance with well established tradition bearers.  The relaxed, informal atmosphere of the house sessions is well suited for the passing on of music, dance and stories.   Melody and Derrick Cameron are from Mabou, Cape Breton Island.  Their performances offer traditional violin and step dance by Melody Cameron with celtic guitar accompaniment and storytelling by Derrick Cameron.  Derrick Cameron and Melody Cameron are the founders of the Celtic group, Triskele.  Triskele performances include Cape Breton style fiddle by Calum MacKenzie, piano accompaniment by Joel Chiasson and the singing of traditional Gaelic songs and puirt a beul by Colin Watson.   Triskele shows have occasionally featured performances by  singer/songwriter, Lisa Cameron or singer/guitarist Matthew MacLennan.  Melody and Derrick and Triskele have played many venues around Nova Scotia and beyond including Celtic Colours International Festival events.

Melody Cameron is also a well respected teacher of the Cape Breton style of step dancing.  Melody has given instruction in solo step dancing and does workshops in the Scot's Four and the Inverness County Square Set.  It is this experience in step dance instruction that  has given Melody Cameron the opportunity to work with such artists as  Malke Rosenfeld of "Cucanandy" and Mabou, Cape Breton's "The Rankin Family".
